From 1988–2008, Tom and his wife, Carol, served in Japan as Presbyterian Church (USA) mission co-workers, where he taught on the faculties of Hokuriku Gakuin Junior College, Seiwa College , Tokyo Union Theological Seminary, and was adjunct at International Christian University. After returning to the United States in 2008 and before coming to OMSC in August 2016, Tom was program director for research and development (8/2008–12/2008), director of research 1/2009–9/2010), associate director (9/2010–8/2011), and Houston Witherspoon Research Fellow in Theology & Science (9/2011–6/2012) at the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton, NJ, senior research fellow in religion and science at the Japan International Christian University Foundation in New York City (2012–2015), and research consultant at the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia in New York City and Hong Kong (2015–2016).
In addition to many publications in Japanese and English, he is author of Seeing All Things Whole: The Scientific Mysticism and Art of Kagawa Toyohiko 1888–1960 (Pickwick, 2015) and Practical Theology and the One Body of Christ: Toward a Missional-Ecumenical Model (Eerdmans, 2007).
Most recently, with Knut-Willy Sæther Tom co-edited The Grace of Being Fallible in Philosophy, Theology, and Religion (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020).
He received his BA from Boston College, MA from Wheaton College Graduate School, and PhD from Princeton Theological Seminary. He is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA).
