Kagawa Toyohiko (1888–1960): The Missional Art of a Great Japanese Evangelist

Dr. Thomas John Hastings, OMSC Executive Director and scholar of Japanese Christianity, examines the life of Kagawa Toyohiko, a Japanese convert led to Christian faith by American Presbyterian missionaries. Kagawa attended Princeton Theological Seminary and Princeton University (1914-1916) and went on to creatively integrate the spiritual, cosmological, and ethical dimensions of a Christ-centered faith. He had a huge—though often unacknowledged—impact on 20th-century Japanese society and was nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize after WWII. We will consider the relevance of Kagawa's views for Christian mission today.
